How do I get motivated to train for triathlon again?

While triathlon races are held year-round these days all over the world, most triathletes will have an A race around which they structure their season. Many will take an off-season after the A race. But what happens when you enjoy that break a little too much? How do you get yourself motivated to get back into triathlon?

Team MaccaX member Clinton Millar writes:

“Hey guys I think for the first time since I started triathlon I’ve hit a zero motivation spot. I took a well-deserved break after my last ironman in May, which falls right onto winter here in Australia and it felt good to do other stuff other than tri, tri, tri. Two weeks off turned into 3-4 you get it. I usually do a 70.3 or a race of some sort start of September but this yr had no motivation to sign up to race anything…

“Since May I haven’t been to a pool at all! I’ve run maybe 50kms total and if it wasn’t for indoor Zwift rides then bike riding would be low numbers too. I lost the last 8 days with a bad case of flu that the whole family caught.

“I’m at a cross roads and I’m looking for advice.”

Coach Justin Granger suggests:

Reinvent yourself! Pick a random event – something you would never have thought to do before. Target it, prepare for it and see what you feel after completing it! It might just make you realise there is something you miss.”

Chris “Macca” McCormack suggests:

“Mate everyone goes through this and it is a habit that you break by doing again. It’s a drag getting out and doing it, but find that drive to do that again.

“As professionals this was basically our life. I was never super motivated to get out everyday and do it. It just had to be done and I found setting micro goals for myself made things a little easier.

“Often change things around and look at different training challengers, or set a goal within a discipline. For example maybe now just spend a bunch of time running and pushing to run fast. Forget your structured program but look at dropping other things and finding something you can target within a training structure that gives you focus and fun to achieve.

“For me it was always swim-focused. I found this helped me find my motivation again and then I naturally fell back into my normal training structures after about 4 weeks.

“Also buy new kit  and watch Rocky 4.”
